What to Eat When You Have An Underactive Thyroid


You know the feeling when you’re drained out, sluggish, you’re getting that hideous brain fog and you just want to lie down? Try not to succumbed to it, fight with everything you’ve got and ride it out. I know for some underactive thyroid sufferers it will be a lot harder – we don’t all suffer the same symptoms or the same intensity of symptoms.

The importance of our daily diet relates heavily to our thyroid health. We need to get the necessary nutrients from our diet to help the thyroid function better. Try implementing the below foods into your daily diet and see if it helps you in any way.

  • Mixed nuts

Nuts have the nutrient selenium which is good for your thyroid. Keep it to one handful a day though as nuts are also high in fat.

  • Seaweed and Fish 

Seaweed has a high concentration of iodine which is an essential nutrient for thyroid function. Seaweed offers nutritional benefits of fiber, calcium and vitamins A, B, C, E, and K. You can buy Sea Kelp supplements which has 1% iodine in them however please consult your doctor or healthcare professional before you buy it. Also try having a couple of portions of fish a week too which is packed with Omega-3.

  • Antioxidants

Try to eat foods rick in antioxidants like: Blueberries, strawberries, cherries, tomatoes, squash and bell peppers. Have a fruit salad during the day and add veg with your lunch or dinner. Dark chocolate is also a great antioxidant.

  • Eggs

Whether you like them scrambled, fried, boiled or poached eggs are super versatile and easy to make. Win-win!

  • Beans and Lentils

These are a great source for sustained energy because they create protein, antioxidants, complex carbohydrates and loads of vitamins and minerals. They are also high in fibre, so if you suffer from constipation (another lovely symptom of underactive thyroid)  you should eat more beans and lentils.

  • Olive oil and Coconut Oil

Use one of these two oils when you’re cooking your foods. Both contain nutrients which are good for your thyroid.
